Scottsdale Artists League Rules, Guidelines & Code of Conduct

One of the things that makes the Scottsdale Artists League such a special organization is the spirit of respect, encouragement, and cooperation shared by our members. We want every artist, volunteer, instructor, guest, venue partner, and visitor to enjoy a positive experience whenever they participate in League activities.

Membership Rules, Guidelines & Code of Conduct

(as of 8/23/2026)

The following guidelines help us maintain a welcoming, professional, and supportive environment for everyone. We encourage all members to become familiar with these expectations. The complete Code of Conduct is available on our website and should be reviewed by every member.

General Membership Conduct

As a member of the Scottsdale Artists League, we ask that you:

  • Treat fellow members, guests, instructors, volunteers, venue staff, and visitors with courtesy, kindness, and respect at all times.

  • Help create an environment that is welcoming, inclusive, and supportive of artists at every experience level.

  • One of the things we love most about SAL is the wonderful variety of styles, subjects, and creative voices our members bring to every show and meeting. That richness is what makes our community special.

As a gentle reminder, we ask that artwork shared in SAL exhibitions and events steer clear of political, religious, and controversial themes.  In the same spirit, we also ask that political discussions be set aside during SAL gatherings. Our members and patrons come from all across the spectrum, and keeping our shared spaces welcoming to everyone lets the art — and the artist — stay at the center of the conversation.

  • Address disagreements or concerns respectfully and privately whenever possible. If a matter cannot be resolved, a Board Member will be happy to assist.

  • Understand that members who violate the League's Code of Conduct may be subject to disciplinary action, including suspension or termination of membership, in accordance with League policies.

Exhibition Submission Guidelines

Our exhibitions are one of the highlights of SAL membership. To help ensure a successful experience for everyone, please keep the following guidelines in mind:

  • Only current, dues-paid members may submit artwork to League-sponsored juried and non-juried exhibitions.

  • All submitted artwork must be original, created solely by the exhibiting artist.

  • Artwork must be properly framed, wired, mounted, or otherwise prepared according to the published specifications for each exhibition.

  • Entry fees, when applicable, are due at the time the Hold Harmless form is submitted and are non-refundable.

  • Accepted artwork is expected to remain on display for the duration of the exhibition unless prior approval is granted by the Board.

  • The League reserves the right to photograph exhibited artwork for promotional and educational purposes.

  • Artwork sales are encouraged. A 30% commission on artwork sold during League exhibitions helps support League programs and future events.

Use of League Spaces & Equipment

We appreciate everyone's help in keeping our shared spaces clean, safe, and enjoyable.

Members are asked to:

  • Leave meeting rooms, venues and shared equipment clean and in the same condition in which they were found.

  • Report damaged equipment or facility concerns to the appropriate coordinator or Board Member.

  • Accept responsibility for damage to League property resulting from negligence or misuse.

Online Community & Communications

Our online community is an extension of our organization and should reflect the same spirit of respect and professionalism that we enjoy in person.

Members are encouraged to:

  • Use the League meetings and social media channels for art-related discussions, event information, networking, and sharing creative accomplishments.

  • Refrain from commercial advertising, solicitation, or spam within member communication channels.

  • Celebrate fellow members' accomplishments and provide thoughtful, constructive encouragement.

  • Respect the League's name, logo, and branding, which may not be used without prior Board authorization.
